The Clarion Set (The Story Of Australian Independent Label Clarion 1965-1974)

Compilation of the pioneering 60s/early 70s Australian independent Clarion label. A smorgasbord of driving R&B, sunshine pop, studio psychedelia and progressive rock recorded in Perth, Western Australia. Based in Perth, teenager Martin Clarke was working at a local radio station when he converted a spare bedroom into a makeshift recording studio. That modest early venture evolved into Martin Clarke Recording Studios, which opened in 1962 to become Perth's first professional recording facility. By the time the studio purchased a four-track in 1966, Clarke had launched the Clarion label, working with a constant stream of solo singers and beat/R&B groups. With a raised profile after Perth TV personality Johnny Young had a national hit with the Easybeats-penned 'Step Back', Clarion signed a number of promising new acts that included The Valentines (featuring a pre-AC/DC Bon Scott) and Young's TV colleague Robbie Snowden. Clarion went on to have a number of regional and national successes, releasing interesting music into the 70s (British expatriates The Birds and Chalice, plus local progressive rockers Fatty Lumpkin) before Clarke wound down the label and relocated to England.

'The Clarion Set' assembles the pick of the label's roster, with choice selections from the aforementioned acts as well as female-fronted folk rockers Gemini, powerhouse R&B/soul vocalist Ray Hoff, pre-Valentines garage band The Spektors and in-house psychedelic experiment The Vegetable Garden. The Glorious release outstanding new album "Falcon" produced by Julian Mendelsohn

Three piece Melbourne folk/pop/rock outfit The Glorious have just released their second album, "Falcon". Produced by Julian Mendelsohn (Kate Bush, Paul McCartney), this album has leanings towards the sublime sounds of  artists like The Jayhawks and Real Estate with a nod towards the psychedelic sounds of 60's artists like The Byrds and Crosby, Stills and Nash.

Marty's review: Combining jangling guitars and sweet harmonies with peddle steel, piano and strings, this smooth and tightly produced effort is an album that improves with each listen. It comes at you in a "full sound" which in some ways reminds one of the Phil Spector productions. With an overall feel that's not quite laid back but not overblown either, this collection of heartfelt and emotional tunes leaves you almost gasping after each track. Songwriter and guitarist Dave Mather has opened up some personal musings in his writing and these come across in a way that demands attention. Standout tracks for me are St Clare, Wheel of Confusion, The Wave and I Wake Up. Each track on the album does stand out on its own without being long winded and in some cases almost understated.

Neil Rogers of The Australian Mood, notably said The Glorious create a “captivating sound with great songs, soaring harmonies, and heartfelt playing.”

Australia's The Glorious Give a Taste of Forthcoming Album with Premiere of "Toward Neptune"

The Glorious are ready for American success with their forthcoming album “Falcon” due out January 8th. Compared to sweetly sublime stylings of The Jayhawks and Real Estate, the Aussie band has teamed up with producer Julian Mendelsohn (Paul McCartney, Belle & Sebastian) on this upcoming album.

Listen to the premiere of “Toward Neptune” here.

(Los Angeles, CA) November 30, 2015 - The Musebox today announced the premiere of “Toward Neptune”— the finely crafted pop single from Australia’s The Glorious. “Toward Neptune” is the second release from Falcon, the Melbourne band’s forthcoming full-length album co-produced by Julian Mendelsohn (Paul McCartney). Neil Rogers of The Australian Mood, notably said The Glorious create a “captivating sound with great songs, soaring harmonies, and heartfelt playing.”

“Toward Neptune” is a chronicle of a journey into deep space. Inspired in equal measure by George Harrison's 'Beware of Darkness' and the Ridley Scott film 'Prometheus', It is a literal exploration of an imaginary mission to our farthest planet. Produced by singer-songwriter Dave Mather and Julian Mendelsohn (Kate Bush, Paul McCartney), the song bristles with metallic guitars, spacey keyboards and a dead-eye unison vocal by Mather and drummer Dan Gard'ner. The clenched-fist rhythm section nails the track down while the melody floats in dreamy echo, evoking a mixture of bliss and dread as the song moves toward the outer reaches of the universe.

Founded in Melbourne in 2004 by Mather and longtime friend and collaborator Dan Gard'ner, The Glorious began as a vehicle for Mather's songwriting before evolving into a full band. The band's lineup solidified with the addition of Joel Loukes (bass) and Danny Stain (guitar).

Axiom...Fool's Gold..debut album from 1970..supergroup that combined folk, country and rock

Formed in Melbourne in 1969 by Brian Cadd and Don Mudie, both former members of leading Melbourne popsters The Groop, Axiom were arguably Australia's first true supergroup. Besides his success with The Groop, Brian Cadd wrote hits for other acts, including "Elevator Driver" for the Master's Apprentices and "When I Was Only Six Years Old" for Ronnie Burns and both he and Mudie worked as session players on a number of important recordings including the Russell Morris' classics "The Real Thing" and "Part III into Paper Walls".

After linking up in The Groop, Mudie and Cadd formed a successful songwriting partnership that carried on through Axiom and beyond. Glenn Shorrock was the former lead singer of The Twilights; Lavery was from Perth's (in)famous The Valentines; Stockley was from leading Melbourne group Cam-Pact.

Axiom signed to Ron Tudor's Fable Records. Their first single "Arkansas Grass" (co-written by Cadd and Mudie) was an immediate hit, reaching #7 in December 1969. Cadd, like many other Aussie musicians, had been deeply influenced by the trend towards a fusion of country and folk elements with rock. Songs like "Arkansas Grass" show how well and how quickly Axiom mastered the idiom.

Their second single "Little Ray of Sunshine" shot to #5 in April 1970 and has since become a standard. Their first two Axiom singles are rightly considered classics, and the latter, a perennial favourite, has become one of Glenn Shorrock's trademark songs. It was followed by Axiom's brilliant debut LP Fools Gold, which was both widely praised and a significant commercial success, reaching #18 on the album chart in June.

Fool's Gold unquestionably ranks as one of the best and most original Aussie albums of the period. It was also a significant step forward in creative control, being one of the very first Australian rock albums released on a major label that was produced by the artists themselves.

Axiom deserve to be recognised as an important musical bridge between Sixties pop and Seventies rock in Australia, as one of the first serious attempts to make Australian rock with international appeal, and as one of the finest bands of their time.

Mississippi...the precursor to LRB...album and EP from 1972

Before the Little River Band there was Mississippi. They evolved from Adelaide folk-rock band called Alison Gros, a trio consisting of Graeham Goble, Russ Johnson and John Mower. Alison Gros recorded one independent single ("Naturally" / "Would You Really Have To Go?") on the Gamba label in 1970. The band then moved to Melbourne and signed to Ron Tudor's Fable Records, for whom they cut two more singles in 1971, "If I Ask You" / "So Good" (July) and "All The Days" / "Weaver Of Life" (December).

In early 1972, Alison Gros changed their name to Mississippi. They recorded their excellent self-titled debut LP with the addition of session players Peter Jones (piano), Geoff Cox (drums), Barry Sullivan (bass, ex-Chain) and Graham Lyall (flute). It was released in September that year on Fable's new Bootleg imprint, a subsidiary label recently set by Tudor and musician Brian Cadd. The Mississippi album showcased the band's considerable vocal abilities and Goble and Johnson's strong writing skills. The material and the tight harmonizing showed the influence of groups like The Hollies, The Bee Gees, Crosby and Stills, Nash & Young. Their debut single "Kings of the World" (released in July) became a Top 10 hit in October.

There were several more lineup changes, beginning in February 1973 when Russ Johnson left to join Country Radio; he was replaced for a month by Kerryn Tolhurst (who had himself just left Country Radio). When Tolhurst left to form The Dingoes he was replaced by Harvey James. Their next single, "Early Morning" / "Sweet World" was released in July '73, and in October they supported The Jackson Five on their Australian tour. When the tour ended, Deleuca and Mower both left the band. Deluca was replaced first by bassist Andre Santos, then by Charlie Tumahai (ex- Healing Force, Chain, Friends) in December.

In January 1975 they put together a new lineup, adding classically-trained guitarist and arranger Rick Formosa and bassist Roger McLachlan and began gigging. For the first few months they performed as Mississippi, but on the way to a gig in Geelong, Victoria, they decided to change the name to The Little River Band, which they took from a signpost along the road. The rest is History - under the guidance of Glenn Wheatley, LRB were the first Australian band to successfully break through into the American market, and became one of the greatest international successes in Australian music history.

Founding member Russ Johnson died in Adelaide on 15 September 2007 after suffering a stroke.

Greg Quill and Country Radio...Fleetwood Plain...classic 1971 album

The blending of rock with elements of country music and folk was one of the most important directions in music in the late Sixties and early Seventies. Singer-songwriter Greg Quill and his band Country Radio were pioneers in this field in Australia. Many people will remember Country Radio for their popular and enduring hit "Gypsy Queen", which made the Australian Top 20 in late 1972.

Prior to forming Country Radio, Quill was already well-known on the Sydney folk scene as a solo performer, and he also ran The Shack, the fondly-remembered folk venue at Narrabeen, on Sydney's Northern Beaches in the late 1960s. A meeting with publisher and producer Gus McNeil led to Greg being signed to Gus's new Cellar Music publishing company. Gus produced Greg's first commercial recordings, the single "Fleetwood Plain" and the subsequent album of the same name, recorded for EMI in 1970, on which he was backed by John Walsh (bass), Chris Blanchflower (harmonica), Orlando Agostino (guitars) and members of Pirana, the band which had formed from the final lineup of McNeil's old backing group The Nomads -- Graeme Thompson (bass), Jim Yonge (drums),  Tony Hamilton (lead guitar) and  Stan White (piano). The LP was released on EMI's new progressive subsidiary, Harvest.

1. "Empty Pockets/Leaving The City"
2. "Fleetwood Plain"
3. "Paradise"
4. "Just Goodbye"
5. "I'd Not Let You Be"
6. "Song To David"
7. "Commissar" 4:32
8. "Observations From A Second Storey Window"
9. "Windy On The Main"
10. "Susannah Lee"
11. "If You Ever"

12. "Kitty's Song"

Tully...Sea of Joy.. The Original Soundtrack 1972

Tully formed in Sydney in late 1968, and, along with Tamam Shud (with whom they often performed), they were the doyens of the Sydney underground/progressive scene in the late 60's and early '70s. Their lyrical and expansive music and their interest in mysticism and esoteric philosophy was at some remove from the earthy blues/boogie ethos of contemporaries like The Aztecs, but they built up a strong following on the Sydney underground scene and the Melbourne concert circuit. Tully's members were all highly accomplished multi-instrumentalists, with years of experience behind them, and this musical breadth quickly earned them a reputation as one of the most adventurous and polished concert bands of the period.

Tully :
Colin Campbell - guitar
Michael Carlos - keyboards
Richard Lockwood - flute, sax, clarinet, piano
Ken Firth - bass
Shayna (Karlin) Stewart - vocals

Tully released 3 albums in the 1970's:
  • Tully (July 1970)
  • Sea Of Joy (June 1971)
  • Loving is Hard (1972)
An augmented version of Tully (billed as "Tully +4") provided instrumental backing for the "HAIR - Original Australian Cast Recording" in 1970. Tully vocalist Terry Wilson was a member of the original cast in 1969-70 and performs "Aquarius" on the soundtrack LP.

Sea of Joy is the soundtrack to an Australian surfing documentary movie released in 1971.
