LUCY B..pre-selected for 3 ARIA awards and new EP release

ARIA nominee, Lucy B, was recently invited to sing at the ASA National Songwriting Awards. After being pre-selected for 3 ARIA awards, Lucy B is also about to release latest EP 'Behaviour'.

Following a brilliant performance at the Allianz Stadium last year, Lucy B was invited to perform as the Feature Artist for the ASA Awards, where she discussed her experiences as a singer-songwriter and sang her latest singles, 'Tonight (Leaving on a Lie)'  and 'Limbo (Life Goes On)'. This music industry event saw Daryl Braithwaite, Lee Kernaghan and Category Winners of the 33rd Australian Songwriting Contest perform, as the songwriting community celebrated the best in this field.

Inspired by Sarah McLachlan, Norah Jones, The Doors, Aretha Franklin, Adele, and The Beatles, it was only fitting that her debut album 'Botany St.' was recorded at the legendary, Abby Road Studios in London. "It’s such an amazing place, full of musical history and was a dream come true to record there" ..Lucy B

Botany Street, which features the tracks “Dr Phil”, “Sing Me a Song” & “In The Middle”, was shortlisted for 3 Aria nominations for Best Female Artist, Independent Release & Contemporary Artist.

Marty's review: Lucy B personifies the terms "class" and "talent". These come out in her persona, vocals and songwriting abilities. Her voice comes across with confidence and has a clarity that is a joy to listen to. The lyrics to her songs are well crafted and have that personal touch to them that entices you to listen closely and take in the story. The production on her recordings is top notch and incorporates many elements to create an overall sound that fills out each track.

HOPE debut single from Thaylia Number 1 on the AMRAP Airit Now Charts

Thaylia's debut single entitled 'HOPE'  continues to go from strength to strength. After reaching number 2, Hope is now number 1 on the AMRAP Airit Now Charts making it the most ordered for airplay for this week in the top 10.

‘Your voice can be an anthem of courage inspiration, hope and honour to the world and people around you.’ Thaylia

Marty's review: Thaylia presents us with a most beautiful piece that will make you hit the repeat button more than once. A clean, uncluttered production that highlights Thaylia's warm vocal tones, musical abilities and lyrics that are heartfelt and sincere. Thaylia to me says sit up and listen because I have something to say. Her talents are plentiful and deserve all the recognition that comes her way.

Thaylia brings to the stage a voice of courage, inspiration and hope. Beginning her musical journey at Abmusic college, a music college for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, she is now establishing her reputation as a strong solo artist with a powerful message and a soaring voice that will leave you captivated.

"If I had to put my music into a category I would define my ‘genre’ as Contemporary Folk. Contemporary as it is relevant to my time, and folk because I see my songs as narrative music with a social conscience. As my skills on guitar and vocals have evolved so have my songs, and the difference is evident from the very first song I wrote up until my most recent. I see that my songs will continue to change as my skills further develop as well. For now it is just me and my acoustic guitar. The goal is release an album that is organic, uncluttered and a true representation of what I do on a stage."

Thaylia is looking forward to continued success with an interview on Noongar Radio with Michelle Wilson 2:30pm AEST (15 jan 14) which can be streamed online at www.noongarradio.com  and a feature article in January's edition of the Deadly Vibe magazine. She will also be heading back into the studio at the end of January to record her second single called Love with one of Australia's top producers Steve Peach (Producer of Stafford Brothers, Marcia Hines, Icehouse).

You can also get to know Thaylia even better by listening to her interview with Kristy McMahon last Sunday from Brisbanes 4ZZZ Indigi-Briz program at : http://ondemand.4zzzfm.org.au/indigi-bris/2014-01-12

Justin Hunter .. new single release "Clever Boy"..Depeche Mode meets The Presets

Justin Hunter is a passionate lover of life, absolute adventure maniac, ultra-marathon runner, electro music fan and instrumental pianist. Justin’s career began in the most humble of ways: in his hometown of Katoomba in the Blue Mountains, playing for tips on the piano in his local café. Just three years later Justin has sold thousands of CDs and acquired himself a legion of passionate fans.

Justin’s piano music seems to touch even the most unlikely of (potential) fans. His music has fallen into the hands of artists such as Chris Martin, Pink, Erykah Badu, MIA and Bono.

His first CD release came after customers were insistent that they be able to take his music home with them. ‘Mountain to Masses’, his first album cost a grand sum of $180 to record, and was quick to sell out in Katoomba and the surrounding towns. This prompted Justin to embark on a 10,000km CD-selling journey over the next few years, traveling inland from Queensland, through New South Wales and Victoria, where once in Melbourne, Justin decided to reside among the plethora of creative spaces available to young artists.

The past few years have seen Justin sell volumes of CDs, unprecedented in the current industry for most independent acts without a label, publicist or via traditional retail. His fan-base has evolved through personalised, direct selling during his travels and the strength of word-of-mouth that lovers of music naturally generate.

Justin Hunter's latest dance track is entitled ‘Clever Boy’, which he worked on with DJ Northie. Described as "Depeche Mode meets The Presets", Clever Boy has Justin stepping up to the microphone to perform the vocals himself. ‘Never underestimate others’ is the underlying message of the song, inspired by Justin’s friends & life experiences. The process of being a fool, admitting your faults, getting wiser, and taking control of life defines ‘Clever Boy’.

Since the release of 'Bleed 4 You' with Silent Titan (Thundamentals), Justin is not slowing down. He is currently working with various DJ’s, whilst continuing to collaborate with DJ Kid Kenobi & singer/songwriter Abbe May.

Ooh Poo Pah Doo (Parts 1 and 2) by Johnny O'Keefe

This song was made famous by Billy Thorpe and The Aztecs at Sunbury'72. Johnny O'Keefe recorded it before Thorpie in 1967. I've always loved Thorpie's version, but JO'K's version is worth a listen and, in my opinion, a real rocker!

Ooh Poo Pah Doo (Parts 1 and 2) was originally released in 1967 on the Leedon label (LK-1653). It was written by Jessie Hill, an American R&B and Louisiana blues singer and songwriter. The origins of "Ooh Poo Pah Doo" were apparently created from a tune played by a local pianist, who was known only as Big Four. Hill wrote the lyrics and melody, later expanding the work with an intro taken from Dave Bartholomew. It was further honed on stage, before Hill recorded a demo that he shopped to local record labels, finally recording a session at Cosimo Matassa's studio produced by Allen Toussaint. Upon its early 1960 release, it emerged as a favourite at Mardi Gras, selling 800,000 copies and reaching the Top 5 in the US Billboard R&B chart and a Top 30 slot in the Billboard Hot 100 pop chart.

It has been recorded by many artists including Wilson Pickett, Taj Mahal, Etta James, Ike and Tina Turner, Dr Hook and most famously by Billy Thorpe and The Aztecs. This JO'K version was taken from the 3CD set "Johnny O'Keefe...The Birth of Australian Rock and Roll".

Johnny O'Keefe - Rocker.Legend.Wild One...new book release by Jeff Apter

JOHNNY OKEEFE: Rocker. Legend. Wild One. by Jeff Apter
The colourful, warts and all biography of the Australian musical icon.
Johnny OKeefe was a human dynamo, a rock n’ roll powerhouse whose influence still looms large on the Australia musical landscape. He was brilliantly talented, but possessed a self-destructive streak, and suffered as many breakdowns as he did breakthroughs. Yet he played a huge role in establishing the Australian entertainment industry as we know it today.

OKeefe may have been short in stature, but he was big on ego. You can boo me and you can make fun of me, he once told a hostile audience, but you all paid your money to see me because you love me.’ He was the ultimate performer, and thrived on being on stage, giving the music, and the fans, everything he had. OKeefe died way too young, from a heart attack, at the age of 43, leaving behind a legacy of timeless hits, includinShe Wears My Ring, Shes My Babyand Shout. He recorded 33 Top 40 hits during his lifetime.

Written with the active cooperation of the OKeefe family and the JOK Trust, Jeff Apter tells the colourful and evocative story of the life and times of one of Australias best ever performers.

The definitive story of Australias first king of rock n’ roll, a man simply known as JOK.
The writer had the full support of the JOK Trust and the O’Keefe family.
Colourful and nostalgic evocation of the life and times of an icon.
        Perfect for Fathers Day promotions!
Did you know there is a Johnny OKeefe statue in Coolangatta? Also that Andrew Deal or No        DealOKeefe is Johnnys nephew?

Jeff Apter is a freelance journalist and author (and co-author) of a number of books, including A LITTLE BIRD TOLD ME (with Kasey Chambers) and SHIRL: THE LIFE OF GRAEME SHIRLY’ STRACHAN.
