Brisbane-based millennial rock band Liquid Friends EP release "Birds"..high energy with confidence

Brisbane-based millennial rock band Liquid Friends recently released their debut EP entitled "Birds".

The EP was recorded at Tall Poppy Studios with Nathan Woodrow engineering producing mixing and mastering. They draw influence from Blink 182, The Smith Street Band, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Courtney Barnett and The Hard Aches.

The EP was originally recorded as a four piece but after parting ways with their bass player they are now are a 2 guitar, 1 drummer group with a DZ Deathrays/ Hockey Dad type pedal setup. The songs are mainly about Curtis' girlfriend Bridie who's nickname was birdie, and then it also has the double meaning of just being about girls in general, with birds being a very Australian term. Artwork was done by Curtis. They've been a band for about 2 years so the next lot of songs are already ready to be recorded and they hope to make this year a big one.

facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/liquidfriendsband/

Marty's review: Liquid Friends' debut EP is a dose of high energy alternative/indie punk/grunge-rock that has attitude, confidence and is in your face from start to finish. These guys play tight and loud and know how to get their message across. They deserve attention and will certainly receive it with this impressive debut.

Brisbane-based group Hey Geronimo release latest cut ‘Working For Google’..infectious indie-pop

Following on from releasing their critically praised single ‘Disconnect’, Brisbane-based group Hey Geronimo have just unveiled their latest cut ‘Working For Google’ – another electrifying number lifted from their sophomore album ‘CONTENT’ .

Opening with a wall of searing fuzz-laden guitars, ‘Working For Google’ shifts between frenetic razor sharp rock n’ roll riffs and stripped back muted rhythmic verses, before bursting into its spirited infectious indie-pop choruses.

Singer-Keyboardist Pluto Jonze describes the motivation behind ‘Working For Google’:

"We honestly believe that one day Google is going to be a fundamental interface between our brains and the outside world, and the idea of any corporation having that much power over humanity is terrifying".

In an Australian first, the band has also recruited Artificial Intelligence to "join the line-up” after their long time (human) guitarist left the band. The AI (‘Alex’) wound up writing lead guitar for five songs on ‘CONTENT’, which includes ‘Working For Google’.

To celebrate the release of ‘CONTENT’, Hey Geronimo will set out on an East Coast tour in November with performances set in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. The ambitious new live show draws inspiration from Roger Waters’ recent ‘Us and Them’ world tour.

Debut record ‘Crashing into the Sun’ was received warmly with strong support and glowing reviews from the likes of triple j, Spotify, Sydney Morning Herald, Rolling Stone Australia, Happy and The Music – with each who scored the album awarding 4 & 4.5 stars.

Since their inception, Hey Geronimo have become a mainstay fixture on the Australian festival circuit with appearances at Big Day Out, Festival of the Sun, Homebake, The Big Pineapple Festival and Valley Fiesta. The band have also toured the country multiple times, selling out their own headline shows.

Buffalo...legendary Aussie heavy rockers from the 70's...3rd, 4th and 5th albums

The origins of BUFFALO began in Brisbane, Queensland in 1966 when mates, Dave Tice (vocals) & Pete Wells (bass) played in a band called THE ODD COLOURS.  When this band dissolved, Dave & Pete had a brief stint in STRANGE BREW (66/67) and then formed THE CAPITOL SHOW BAND later in ’67 which became highly successful in the local market.

The band's major recording break came in March 1972 with BUFFALO signing to the prestigious UK label, Vertigo.  This was very significant at the time because BUFFALO were the first band to sign with the label outside of the UK.  Their ’stablemates’ included BLACK SABBATH and URIAH HEEP. The band immediately went into the United Sounds studios to record their first album with producer, Spencer Lee. The album, "Dead Forever", was released in 1972. See original blog post HERE.

Their second album, "Volcanic Rock", was released in 1973. See original blog post HERE.

Brisbane-based beat maker Machine Age releases enigmatic new single 'Fighting'...experimental electronica

Following the release of his stand-out single Don't Look, Brisbane-based beat-maker Machine Age (Adrian Mauro) has returned with new cut 'Fighting’ – drawn from his forthcoming EP (due March 2018).

A completely self-recorded effort, with additional mixing from Slumberjack and mastering by Andrei Eremin (Chet Faker, Hiatus Kaiyote), 'Fighting' is a fusion of eclectic musical genres and influences. Intricately layered instrumentation builds throughout the song, colliding with synth-laden soundscapes and pattering drumbeats, resulting in his own brand of experimental electronica. Meanwhile, a sense of desperation is encapsulated beautifully by raw, simmering vocals.

Mauro describes the inspiration behind ‘Fighting’ –

“Fighting - When you find yourself paralyzed by your own decisions and wake up asking "How did I get here". The only way to gain clarity is to be kinder to yourself and not repeat the mistakes of the past”.

2017 has seen Machine Age develop a reputation for delivering impressive compositions and incredible live shows, garnering strong support from the likes of triple j, Rolling Stone Australia, Purple Sneakers, Tone Deaf, FBi, 3RRR and the Hype Machine blogging community. The songsmith also recently supported critically acclaimed duo Holy Holy on their 'Paint' tour, alongside writing and recording with the likes of Kuren and Slumberjack.

Brisbane-based indie-electronic artist, AUSTEN, new single release 'Storm'

Brisbane-based indie-electronic artist, AUSTEN, is excited to reveal her stunning new single ‘Storm’ – produced and recorded by James Angus (Midas.Gold, Carmouflage Rose, Gill Bates).
Taking cues from the likes of Broods, Halsey and Banks, ‘Storm’ is a dark and brooding cut of intricate electronica-pop. Song structure navigates effortlessly as dynamics are harnessed with finesse; flickering in between swirling synths, meticulous percussion, deep moody bass and ethereal vocals.

Stream the single on Soundcloud HERE

AUSTEN describes the motivation behind the track:

“I wrote Storm in one shot which just started with the line ‘I was talking to myself’ - the whole first verse is just exactly what I was doing / feeling before I picked up a pen and started writing. It was the start of me falling for someone and how in that moment everything is so insane and you feel like you’re in the eye of this whirlwind going on around you. All that energy is coming from that person or from the synthesis of you two together. The lyrics just follow my train of thinking and this process of falling for someone and realising how much that person affects you, and I love the metaphor of the song because for me a storm in the distance is thrilling and exciting if you don’t think you’re going to be hurt by it".

Previous singles ‘Faded’ and ‘Darkside’ have been strongly supported by the likes of triple j, Spotify, community radio and online tastemakers Pilerats, Stoney Roads, inthemix and Purple Sneakers. To coincide with the release of ‘Storm’, AUSTEN is currently touring nationally playing to sold-out crowds alongside The Kite String Tangle and Golden Vessel.

Solomon O - Hypnotic Debut Single "Holograms" with amazing video

Since picking up a guitar at an early-age, Brisbane-based musician, Solomon O has formed a deep and insatiable love for writing and performing music. Fast track to the present and that endearment remains undeniably strong as he launches his new stunning debut track ‘Holograms’.

CLICK TO LISTEN TO 'HOLOGRAMS'

‘Holograms’ was a complete DIY recording effort by Solomon O and friend / session drummer, Brandon Gillies, and tracked between his Brisbane home studio and on the NSW Central Coast at The Grove. The mesmerizing indie-pop cut glides along effortlessly, driven by its luscious and full sounding rhythm section, beautifully composed synths and capped off by Solomon O’s dream-laden and soothing croons.

Growing up, Solomon O learned classical guitar and piano and later found himself joining a gospel band, which taught the musician the fundamental elements of arranging and composing songs. After a brush with a drug-fueled party lifestyle, the song-smith did a complete 180 turn by undertaking and completing a psychology degree.

Following on from university, Solomon O decided to pack up his life and move to London. After what he describes an ‘early-life crisis’, he moved back to Australia, choosing Sydney as his new home where he started working on ‘Holograms’ and a collection of other songs he plans on releasing soon.

These days the enigmatic creative finds himself back in his hometown of Brisbane and slightly more settled; indulging in spending most of his pay check on new instruments and recording equipment.

Matt Taylor...Straight As A Die...1973 album from Aussie blues legend

Matt Taylor was born in Brisbane, Queensland, in 1948. Taylor began listening to blues records in high school, and taught himself the guitar and harmonica. In February 1966 he joined the Bay City Union, one of Australia’s first electric blues bands. They moved to Melbourne in December 1966 and achieved some success playing in dance halls and clubs. They recorded a single "Mo’reen" and "Mary Mary" released on the Festival label in 1968. Among the other members of this band was Glenn Wheatley, who was also their manager.

The Bay City Union broke up in May 1968. Taylor joined the Wild Cherries in October 1968, but left the following month. During 1969 and 1970, he played with progressive heavy rock / blues bands Horse and Genesis (not the UK prog band of the same name).

From September 1970 to October 1971, Taylor was the front-man for the blues band Chain, which had a hit single ("Black and Blue") and album ("Toward the Blues") during this period. He then quit the music industry and went to live on a commune led by Fred and Mary Robinson at Beechworth.

In 1973 he returned to the music scene as a solo artist, releasing three albums over the next three years, and scoring a major hit with the single "I Remember When I Was Young". He was one of the first artists to record for Mushroom Records, and was managed by Michael Gudinski.

"Straight As A Die" was released in 1973 and features prominent Australian guitarist Phil Manning.

The Saints (I'm) Stranded....classic Aussie punk-rock from 1977

The Saints originated in Brisbane and were founded by Chris Bailey (singer-songwriter, later guitarist), Ivor Hay (drummer), and Ed Kuepper (guitarist-songwriter) in 1974. Alongside mainstay Bailey, the group has had numerous line-ups. In 1975, contemporaneous with the United States' Ramones, The Saints were employing the fast tempos, raucous vocals and "buzz saw" guitar that characterised early punk rock. With their debut single, "(I'm) Stranded", in September 1976, they became the first alleged punk band outside the US to release a record, ahead of better-known acts including the Sex Pistols and The Clash. They are one of the first and most influential groups of the genre.

In early 1979, the Saints had imploded, leaving Bailey to continue the band, with a variable line-up. All Fools Day peaked in the Top 30 on the Australian Kent Music Report Albums Chart in April 1986. Bailey also has a solo career and had relocated to Sweden by 1994. The band was inducted into the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Hall of Fame in 2001.

Buffalo..Dead Forever...debut album from 1972..play this album LOUD!

Prior to the album being released, their first single “Suzie Sunshine” backed with the non album track, Chuck Berry’s “No Particular Place To Go” was released early in April to wet fans appetites.  The single received little airplay with the radio station programmers virtually ignoring it, much to the annoyance of the record company, the band and their management.  In order to gain more airplay, Phonogram put on a bash for the media at the Paddington Town Hall on 28/5/72 featuring BUFFALO performing live as well as CHAIN, SPECTRUM & COLOURED BALLS.

In May, the album “Dead Forever” was released and received good reviews, although the cover caused quiet a stir, setting the scene for even more controversy on later albums.  BUFFALO liked their music loud and this was imparted to fans on the back cover by stating “play this album LOUD!“  Live, the BUFFALO volume was loud like a huge stampede and they soon had the reputation as being Australia’s loudest band.

The Purple Hearts & The Coloured Balls...Benzedrine Beat! 1964-1970

The Purple Hearts were formed in Brisbane in 1964. The band consisted of lead vocalist Mick Hadley, lead guitarist Barry Lyde (known as Lobby Loyde), rhythm guitarist Fred Pickard, bassist Bob Dames, and drummers Adrian 'Red' Redmond (1964–66) and Tony Cahill (1966-67). Like so many Australian beat groups of the '60s, The Purple Hearts had their roots far closer to the source of the British Invasion than the sunburnt suburbia from which they finally emerged.

Although they were part of the Sunshine Records stable,The Purple Hearts were uncompromising in their attitude toward recording. Consequently, their handful of singles are enduring artifacts of their unique style, which blended blues, R'n'B and prototype psychedelic rock, a style made even tougher by the regional influence mentioned earlier. Even their name, taken from the well-known slang term for a variety of amphetamine pop pills much favoured by mod subculture, was a brash and outrageous gesture.

It is notable that Brisbane, traditionally the most conservative of Australia's state capitals, has fostered some of the country's most anarchistic rock bands from The Purple Hearts to The Saints. The Purple Hearts were tough, arrogant and pioneering and Lobby Loyde is widely acknowledged as Australia’s first true rock guitar hero – busy blowing up speaker boxes before high volume and feed-back became rock staples.

This compilation combines 14 tracks by the PH's and 7 by offshoot band The Coloured Balls.

1 The Purple Hearts– Talkin' 'Bout You
2 The Purple Hearts– Louie Louie
3 The Purple Hearts– Long Legged Baby (Demo Version)
4 The Purple Hearts– Gloria
5 The Purple Hearts– Here 'Tis
6 The Purple Hearts– Long Legged Baby
7 The Purple Hearts– Of Hopes And Dreams And Tombstones
8 The Purple Hearts– I'm Gonna Try
9 The Purple Hearts– Early In The Morning
10 The Purple Hearts– Just A Little Bit
11 The Purple Hearts– You Can't Sit Down
12 The Purple Hearts– Tiger In Your Tank
13 The Purple Hearts– Chicago
14 The Purple Hearts– Bring It On Home
15 Coloured Balls– A Song For Jeffrey
16 Coloured Balls– Killing Floor
17 Coloured Balls– Living In The USA
18 Coloured Balls– Bring It On Home
19 Coloured Balls– Long Grey Mare
20 Coloured Balls– Living In The Past
21 Coloured Balls– Living In The USA (Live)

Tony Worsley and The Fabulous Blue Jays..Ready, Steady, Let's Go

Tony was born Anthony Asheen Worsley in England in 1944 and emigrated with his family from his hometown of Hastings to the sunnier climes of Brisbane when he was 15. Tony had already set his sights on a show biz career. As a lad he won several amateur talent quests in England including one judged by Lonnie Donegan and Tommy Steele, which carried first prize of a Decca recording contract.

The Blue Jays were already well established in Melbourne and one of the city's leading dance groups. They had formed in 1959. They cut a series of swingin' instrumental singles and EPs for the Crest label, and a delightfully titled LP, "The Arthur Murray Twist Party Featuring The Blue Jays Big Dance Beat".

The Blue Jays teamed with Tony Worsley at the start of 1964, and with their name enhanced by the suitably glamorous prefix Fabulous the group immediately set about creating a dynamic stage show, centred on Tony's gritty tenor voice, good looks and dynamic showmanship. Tony's 'take-no-prisoners' attitude was backed up by one of the tightest and most competent bands in the country and the Blue Jays trademark 'fat' sound blended sax and guitar in a potent lead instrumental assault, giving them a powerful attack and they soon earned a reputation for upstaging the main acts.
