Country singer-songwriter Hayley Marsten debut album release Spectacular Heartbreak

Singer-songwriter Hayley Marsten recently released her debut album Spectacular Heartbreak. It comes off the back of ever-increasing exposure and popularity as singles off the album, including ‘Wendy’ and ‘Red Wine, White Dress’, strike a chord with listeners across the country.  Marsten has found herself reaching an unprecedented audience and connecting with people through her sometimes sassy, always heartfelt personality.

Speaking about Spectacular Heartbreak, Marsten says it’s ‘as dramatic as it sounds. I had two really clear visions coming in: I only wanted to work with people I was friends with so I could be as honest and exposed as possible, and I wanted the album to sound like my personality: big, and a little dramatic, but still fun with a bit of risk. I think those visions were realised.’

From ‘Wendy’, a tribute to the strength and guidance of Marsten’s mother, to ‘Pretty’, which takes aim at the expectations of aesthetic beauty, Spectacular Heartbreak takes listeners on a journey that’s both universal and incredibly personal. “It was tragic, confusing, it was more than I could take,” sings Marsten on the title track and it’s the perfect way to describe the album itself: tragic, confusing, magic and moving. The biggest gut punch comes last with ‘Time I Have’, which finds Marsten addressing her priorities after playing at a friend’s wake after their unexpected death.

The album was recorded with ARIA Award and Golden Guitar winning producer Matt Fell at Love HZ Studio in Sydney in what’s been an ongoing and successful professional relationship. ‘He really flipped for my vision of the album,’ says Marsten, ‘and totally ran with my ideas.’ Those ideas included bringing strings into the studio and letting Arna Georgia, her friend and fellow country musician, whistle on one of the tracks.

‘I think that at first glance you could probably write this as just another break-up album,’ says Marsten, ‘but it’s much more than that. With a name like Spectacular Heartbreak you’d be correct in assuming I’ve run into a few heartbreaks over the past two years, but I don’t hear sadness or defeat in this record. It’s about strength and acceptance, about standing up for what you believe is right and living like you don’t how much time you have. I think it’s the perfect representation of me as a young woman finding her place in the world and trying to find the spectacular in the heartbreak.’

Queensland singer/songwriter Robert Cini new single ‘Different Road’ from debut album "Imaginary Fun"

Award-winning Singer/Songwriter from Far North Queensland Robert Cini announces his new single ‘Different Road’ off the soon-to-be-released debut album "Imaginary Fun".

The sunny Jack Johnson like island vibes captivate a listener into a toe-tapping free-fall of melodic bliss. This is in part contrast to the weighty-personal inspiration behind the infectious tune, stemming from Robert’s struggles with feeling ‘Different’ to those around him due to his vision impairment, something he’s had since birth. The lyrical content is however made fun, light and widely accessible.

Robert says “Different Road” is both a very personal and relatable song”.  “Anyone that feels a little different and out of place, or has life a bit tougher than normal, I think will relate to this song”.

Marty's review: this instantly infectious song from Robert Cini has an upbeat and positive vibe about it that will draw listeners in and create a spark in the brain. With an island/reggae feel to it, the production is crisp and bright and Robert's songwriting skills are fresh and focused. There is certainly something in that far-north Queensland air!

Q&A session with Indie-Rock quartet WHARVES

Lennox Head-based indie-rock quartet, WHARVES, recently released their brand new single titled ‘Man You Want Me To Be’ – recorded and produced by Steven Schram (San Cisco, Tiny Little Houses) at Studio Circuit, Gold Coast QLD. (see previous post on this blog: http://theaussiemusicblog.blogspot.com.au/2017/03/indie-rock-quartet-wharves-new-single.html).

I caught up with band member Mike and fired a few hard-hitting questions at him:

Who or what inspired you to form Wharves and how did it all come together?

We met in Lismore through Southern Cross Uni. Matt, Scott and I had just formed the project when Fraser came along to take it to its final form.

Any influences to speak of?

Big ones for me are Radiohead, Beck and Battles. As a band we particularly enjoy the sounds of Foals, City Calm Down, The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys and Queens of the Stone Age.

Where does the name come from and does it have a meaning behind it?

We did a photo-shoot before we had a name which was of us coming out of the water (you can stalk our FB page and find it) and it had a nautical feel to it.  The photographer's (David Andreas) girlfriend typed "WHARVES" in a group-chat when talking about the photo-shoot and Matt liked how it looked and pitched to us and we agreed that it was fitting. A fun fact; we were named Peach Cat for about a week before changing.

Who does the songwriting and is it a collective effort?

It’s definitely a collective effort. We have a few ways of working which is great. Sometimes Matt has an acoustic demo, some just happen in a jam and others come from making demos in Ableton. We’ve got a stack of demos that we are constantly adding to and referring back to.

Do you consider yourselves a strictly Australian group or want to be known internationally?

We would love to be known internationally, playing festivals and gigs overseas would be an absolute dream come true.

How important are outlets like triple j unearthed to help promote local artists?

They are absolutely essential. Triple J Unearthed do such an amazing job of getting bands in there infancy out to the world. (see https://www.triplejunearthed.com/artist/wharves)

Are you happy with your sound or do wish to develop it further? If so, what would you add or improve on?

I’m totally up for developing it in the future. I take a lot of inspiration from Radiohead and Arctic Monkeys have progressed, each album sounds so different but they still have their original characteristics there. We’ve started adding some new gear, Scott just got a new awesome Synth, and I’ve been experimenting using Ableton as a guitar pedal.

Indie Rock quartet WHARVES new single release "Man You Want Me To Be"

Lennox Head-based indie-rock quartet, WHARVES, have just revealed an East Coast tour and their brand new single titled ‘Man You Want Me To Be’ – recorded and produced by Steven Schram (San Cisco, Tiny Little Houses) at Studio Circuit, Gold Coast QLD.

The hauntingly enchanting new cut ‘Man You Want Me To Be’ is reminiscent to some of the group’s staple influences Foals, The Strokes and City Calm Down, featuring driving disco-esque beats, thumping fuzz-laden bass and classic Brit-pop guitar tones, all capped off by the brooding and infectious vocal melodies of front man, Matthew Collins.

Likened to that of a Shakespeare classic, the track is inspired by the tale of a tragic and forbidden love. Collins further expands on the meaning and describes the creative process behind the writing and recording:

“I wanted to indulge the male ego in how it can be so destructive and jealous, in some way trying to understand it. We captured the jagged and dark sounds/feelings in the studio but also kept it within a neat pop structure.”

Stream the track on Soundcloud HERE

Since their 2015 inception, the band have continually released critically adored songs, with strong support from the likes of triple j Unearthed, community radio and worldwide taste-maker blogs. In the live arena, WHARVES have performed at the 2016 Byron Bay leg of Falls Festival and supported some of the countries most loved indie acts including Polish Club, Morning Harvey and The Delta Riggs.

To coincide with the release of ‘Man You Want Me To Be’, the upstarts will traverse the East Coast on an eight-date tour, with performances scheduled in Lismore, Melbourne, Byron Bay, Yamba, Wollongong, Canberra, Sydney and Brisbane.

Matt Taylor...Straight As A Die...1973 album from Aussie blues legend

Matt Taylor was born in Brisbane, Queensland, in 1948. Taylor began listening to blues records in high school, and taught himself the guitar and harmonica. In February 1966 he joined the Bay City Union, one of Australia’s first electric blues bands. They moved to Melbourne in December 1966 and achieved some success playing in dance halls and clubs. They recorded a single "Mo’reen" and "Mary Mary" released on the Festival label in 1968. Among the other members of this band was Glenn Wheatley, who was also their manager.

The Bay City Union broke up in May 1968. Taylor joined the Wild Cherries in October 1968, but left the following month. During 1969 and 1970, he played with progressive heavy rock / blues bands Horse and Genesis (not the UK prog band of the same name).

From September 1970 to October 1971, Taylor was the front-man for the blues band Chain, which had a hit single ("Black and Blue") and album ("Toward the Blues") during this period. He then quit the music industry and went to live on a commune led by Fred and Mary Robinson at Beechworth.

In 1973 he returned to the music scene as a solo artist, releasing three albums over the next three years, and scoring a major hit with the single "I Remember When I Was Young". He was one of the first artists to record for Mushroom Records, and was managed by Michael Gudinski.

"Straight As A Die" was released in 1973 and features prominent Australian guitarist Phil Manning.

Billy T (w/Ross Hannaford)...No Definitions....1977 album...Funk,Soul,Reggae

After the demise of Daddy Cool and Mighty Kong, Ross Hannaford formed Billy T with Joe Creighton in Queensland, and later joined up with Russell Smith (Company Caine) and Mick Holden (The Mixtures), playing a mixture of Reggae, Soul, Funk and Rock in Melbourne. They released 3 singles and their debut LP 'No Definitions'.

As their bass player Joe Creighton recalls on his blog: "..around 1975, I hooked up with Ross Hannaford and we formed Billy T. Billy T was a unique band in that it broke the mold of standard Aussie rock in pubs. With our own brand of blue-eyed soul and reggae we had quite a successful run in the Australian pub circuit. Our tour support with legendary US band 'Little Feat' cemented our profile as the band most likely to do it in '76. Unfortunately Ross and I kept floating off to the US and Europe to play for Maharaj Ji and Billy T suffered the consequences of our absences. The rest of the band basically got jack of it and I can't remember if we got sacked or if we called it quits. But whatever, the band eventually dissolved."

Band Members:
Ross Hannaford (Guitar, Vocals)
Joe Creighton (Bass, Vocals)
Mick Holden (Drums, Vocals)
Geoff Maling (Percussion)
Russell Smith (Guitar, Vocals)
Neal McPherson (Keyboards)
