Northern Beaches quartet Down For Tomorrow energetic grunge-punk anthem "What Could Have Been"

Young and energetic Northern Beaches quartet Down For Tomorrow recently unveiled their latest grunge-punk anthem, ‘What Could Have Been’. The band honed their self-proclaimed “happy-sad Aussie grunge” sound growing up in the rich skating and surfing beaches community, and 'What Could Have Been’ sees them deliver their strongest and most all-encompassing work to date.

The track serves up a heartfelt, rough-around-the-edges statement, bursting with the kind of angst and raw emotion that wouldn't be out of place on a Vans Warped Tour stage. Opening with melancholic, even despondent vocals from lead singer Cody Stebbings, ‘What Could Have Been’ builds into a head-banging bridge that captures the frustration and heavier elements of their music.

Lead singer Cody Stebbings talks about the meaning behind ‘What Could Have Been’:

“'What Could Have Been' was written in a period where I was losing touch with many important friends, and I was just writing sad song after sad song and couldn't find any other release or a way to cover it up. It got to a point where I just realised, I've been wasting so much time trying to fix something that can’t be fixed, there’s no point desperately holding on to people who don’t want anything to do with you anymore. In the bridge, I wanted to leave a glimpse of hope at renewal, and help people see that we can all start over at some point.“

Since their inception, Down For Tomorrow have continually traversed the east coast of Australia, playing house parties, bars and all ages events. Over the last year they have supported other heavyweight Australian pop-punk bands such as Forever Ends Here, The Dead Love and Yours Truly.

Sydney-based punk-rock trio Whispering Jackie release new single "Breaking Up"

Sydney-based punk-rock trio Whispering Jackie have recently released their new single ‘Breaking Up This Time’. Recorded and mixed by Daniel Antix (Gay Paris, Sound of Seasons) at Def Wolf Studios, Sydney, ‘Breaking Up This Time’ is the lead track lifted from their forthcoming sophomore EP ‘For The Moment’ (due late-2017)

Combining elements of punk, grunge and garage-rock, ‘Breaking Up This Time’ takes cues from the likes of the group’s staple influences Magic Dirt, Sonic Youth and Hole, whilst melding more modern sounds of White Lung, Best Coast and DZ Deathrays.

Stream the track on SOUNDCLOUD HERE

Front woman Sare Jackie describes the inspiration and meaning behind the track:

“Breaking Up This Time describes being in an on-off relationship and the ambiguity of not knowing where you stand. The song is sung from my point of view where I'm the one that's being left, and I'm pleading with them to stay, even though I know deep down it's not the right thing for me. It's a situation that heaps of people find themselves in, so I wanted to write a song about that struggle. Everyone's afraid of being left alone.”

Whispering Jackie’s 2016 debut EP ‘Social Isolation’ was received warmly by the Australian punk community, with single ‘Casino Mate’ getting spun on triple j’s ‘short.fast.loud’, 4ZZZ, FBi, RTR and various other community stations.

Marty's take: If it's a good dose of punk-rock you need to get the adrenaline pumping then these guys have the energy to deliver it.

“Part of me is somewhat concerned about Sare's vocal chords, but I feel that is the essence of punk rock. This is ruthless. Nice one!”
Josh Merriel – triple j (AUS)
“That's a serious set of pipes!”
Lachie Macara – triple j (AUS)

Melbourne grunge/pop band Shorts debut EP release "Something Else"

Shorts are a grunge/pop band from Melbourne whose influences include Weezer, Happy Diving, Joyce Manor and Yuck.

They recently recorded their debut EP 'Something Else' with engineer, producer and mix lord Aaron Dobos whose previous work includes The Avalanches, 30 Seconds to Mars and Britney Spears.

Shorts started way back in 2013 when Guitarist Shayne McNeill and vocalist Lachlan Bradford traveled through the states in a worn out, broken down dodge ram. Armed with nothing but an acoustic guitar, the two man band started writing songs inspired by their experience on the road.

Shorts eventually came to formation when long time friend, guitarist/bassist/genius Armarin Saengsri, joined the band in late 2016. Adding some polish and structure Shorts went into the studio to record their debut EP 'Something Else' with producer, engineer and mix lord Aaron Dobos. After laying down the drums for the EP, Mitchell Casey joined the band and as they say, the rest is history.

The first single released was 'Zyka' in April. Check it out on YouTube HERE.

Sun Dogs has just been released and is also now on YouTube:
