Skyhooks - A Collection

Skyhooks were an Australian rock band formed in Melbourne in 1973. Their classic lineup (1974–1977) comprised Graeme "Shirley" Strachan (vocals), Greg Macainsh (bass and backing vocals), Red Symons (guitar, vocals, keyboards), Bob "Bongo" Starkie (guitar and backing vocals), and Imants "Freddie" Strauks (drums).

Known for their flamboyant costumes and makeup, their music addressed a variety of issues including drugs, sex, and the gay scene while frequently referencing Australian places and culture. Evolving from a series of groups with Macainsh and Strauks in the late 1960s and early 1970s, they rose to national prominence when their debut album Living in the 70's (1974), which was initially a moderate success upon release, gained unprecedented popularity the following year, aided by the nascent ABC music show Countdown; the album topped the Australian Kent Music Report chart for a record-breaking 16 weeks and sold over 200,000 copies, becoming the best-selling Australian album at the time. Their second album Ego Is Not a Dirty Word (1975) topped the Kent Music Report for 11 weeks.

Symons and Strachan left in 1977 and 1978 respectively and became media personalities; Symons was replaced with Bob Spencer and Strachan was replaced with Tony Williams, before they disbanded in 1980. The classic lineup reunited four times in the ensuing years, with reunions in 1990 and 1994 producing new material, including the number-one song "Jukebox in Siberia" in 1990. Strachan died in a helicopter crash in 2001; original lead singer Steve Hill, who left and was replaced by Strachan, died in 2005, and original guitarist Peter Starkie died in 2020.

Music historian Ian McFarlane stated that the band "made an enormous impact on Australian social life". In 1992, the group was inducted into the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Hall of Fame. In 2011, the Skyhooks album Living in the 70's was added to the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia's Sounds of Australia registry.

Melbourne Art-Rock artist Halfbeak LP release "Innocent Bystander"...ambient punk and electronica

Halfbeak is prolific Melbourne singer-songwriter Tim Gum. From his beginnings in the early 2000's as 3RRR demo of the month-winning “Snowbug” to his most recent EP “Things I Knew”, which was co-produced by fan and APRA award-winning composer Damien Lane, Tim Gum has written and recorded enough quality material to fill 25-plus LP's. “Innocent Bystander” is the first of many planned LP releases and consists entirely of music written in 2019.

Promotional track “Curvature Of The Spine” is a meditative Sonic Boom-meets-Scott Walker number. The second promotional trackI’ll Be Your One-Way Mirror” is the dark alter-ego of “For The Benefit of Mr. Kite”. Elsewhere, the LP spans electronica, hip hop and art-rock, capturing a broad mix of influences including Kid A, Erik Satie, The Residents, Endtroducing and Blackstar. Lyrically, the LP explores some dark themes. Although decay, destruction, disease and death abound, the work retains the humorous and playful spirit that is core of much of Halfbeak’s backlog. Conceptually, the album comments on the bewildering life choices we sometimes make, and the feeling of powerlessness that some of us feel when the consequences spin out of control.

Genre: Art-Rock, Ambient Punk, Experimental Electronica

Melbourne’s BEACH PANIC! are loud, confident, full of charm and artistic flare, and they’re back with a brand-new grooving tune "Dance 'Till Your Feet Bleed", the latest track off their just announced debut EP ‘Ride The Tiger’ slated for release in late September.

Bringing together their punk-rock roots, love of art, and downright desire to shake a leg, BEACH PANIC! mix good ol’ fashioned party times with slick jangly riffs, ruthless kicks, and lyrics that speak simply of love - from the highest joys to the darkest desperations.

They wear their hearts on their sleeves, their sweat on the D-floor, and leave you with a smile on your face, adrenaline in your veins, and love in your heart.

Marty's thoughts: energetic and infectious punk grooves, a thumping beat, some 60's style psychedelia and a sense of humour from these guys makes this a very entertaining and lovable tune that is sure to hook you in and have you jumping around with a big smile on your face.

Blush'ko reveals soul-infused cut 'Too Late' (ft. J Wils) and announces 'Blush'ko In Love PT.2'

Following soul-infused releases ‘Japanese Hotel’ and ‘Like a Heartbeat’, Macedonian born, Melbourne-based Blush’ko releases ‘Too Late’ (ft. J Wils), the third single off his EP ‘Blush’ko in Love PT.2’. The track, in true Blush’ko-esque style, draws in with its pushing beats backdropped against silky vocals – the result an effortless rhythmic testimonies that dreamily echo and transport us throughout the track.

Speaking on the track himself, Blush’ko says: "We started playing around with the idea of the song being about two people so far away but connected somehow and both trying so hard to make it work. The line 'I promise that I won’t give up' kept rolling through my mind and we built the song around it. I wanted our voices to come together in the pre-chorus because both people in the story felt a great connection and fear from one another.. relying on someone is always extremely hard, but it’s always made easier when you know the feeling is mutual".

Blush’ko continues to own his unique style of smooth, electronic hip hop, a year on from his critically acclaimed debut single 'Another Love' which garnered over a million streams. Intrigue around Blush’ko continues to build, with BBC1 Xtra’s Jams Supernova naming it as one of her top 5 EPs. The musician has further solidified his name in support of Jhene Aiko and SG Lewis on stages around Australia and New Zealand, as well as collaborating with DC rapper Goldlink on his triple j Like a Version performance of ‘Herside Story’ with Billy Davis and The Good Lords.

Too Late’ pioneers Blush’ko’s second EP as a continuation on his journey through love, explored by a plush blend of electronic and soul. A kind of production that layers emotion and talent as one further cementing his sound in the current musical climate as one that is set to stand against the rest this 2019.

Aussie Troubadour Thomas Keating Shares Soul-Baring Single "Today I'm Staying Home"

Melbourne-based singer/songwriter/troubadour Thomas Keating recently released his new single “Today I’m Staying Home,” a nakedly self-referencing song with themes of depression and self-care during times of stress and uncertainty.  As vulnerable and open as a diary entry, “Today I’m Staying Home” is a carefully crafted spotlight on a world that’s completely his own. Gentle guitar pulses atop a bed of driving percussion, as his strikingly clear vocals anchor the guitar-driven song. Produced by Gordon Burke and featuring Keating on guitar, Jenny McCullagh on violin & vocals, Gavin Perkins on bass and Tim Parsons on drums, the single will be available digitally February 1. Keating is also sharing a video to accompany the track, filmed during the recording process of the single.

Keating explains: “Today I'm Staying Home is inspired by one of those mornings where you wake up with the ‘f*ck its’, and you decide instead of leaving your bed or home to face your life and all the responsibilities that come with being an adult in this world, you just stay in. I've always struggled with bouts of depression and anxiety around the uncertainties and pressures of everyday life, and I guess at the time I wrote the song I was going through such a phase. I think it’s important to remember that at times it's okay just to feel like shit - it's okay to put your hand up and say 'I'm not dealing with this very well. I need help'. Mental health is extremely self-alienating, and I'd like to think that we are moving past the stigma of shame that has hung around such ailments for far too long.”

“‘Today, I’m Staying Home’ is a glorious, anthemic paean to cocooning from a prodigious new talent.  A rippling acoustic bedrock underpins Keating’s open heartfelt singing and chorus as wide and open as the Simpson Desert. This is a catchy, jaunty pop song whose lyrics are contrastingly tinged with a hint of regret and melancholia born out of internal struggle and pain.” Backseat Mafia

Samskara Radio release debut single 'Can't Kill The Radio'..catchy 80’s infused electro-pop rock

Simon Marrocco debuts the release of his new music project Samskara Radio, with a catchy 80’s infused electro-pop rock single ‘Can’t Kill The Radio’.

Have a listen to ‘Can’t Kill The Radio’ here: https://soundcloud.com/samskararadio

Can’t Kill The Radio’ is about being confronted with some of lives biggest truths. When we hit rock bottom we start to question who we are and what has led us to be the person we are today; through all of life’s experiences of achievements, relationships, teachings and travels around the world. We are forced to surrender our level of control over what we think we can control, but really can’t. Words can just be labels and the concepts that we learn from childhood can’t really hurt us. The person we have been taught to create in our head is a projection on the screen of life and the screen never really changes. Life lives through us and living life new every day is the key. The field of creativity happens in the now. Being kind to yourself and others, enjoying life and the beauty that is all around us is in fact a form of art itself.

The track was engineered by Troy Borg at Sunnyside Studios, mixed by Michael Badger at Jaya Jaya Music (with credits such as King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard’s ARIA award winning album Nonagon Infinity) and mastered by David Briggs at The Production Workshop. Cover artwork designed by Frank Kruse.

Simon has always been surrounded by music; through his younger years growing up in his birth town of Lenola, Italy and in Melbourne after his parents migrated to Australia when he was just 8. He sang in Choirs then started writing his own songs with his acoustic guitar which transitioned to performing at folk venues in Melbourne. By the early 80’s, Simon was performing in successful bands who were busy backing some huge names in music with the likes of John Farnham, The Angels and The Sunny Boys.

HOUSEHATS destructive music video for ‘I'VE BEEN BROKEN’...cool video, awesome track!

Melbourne-based trio Househats recently released music video for ‘I’ve Been Broken’ directed by Jack Rintoul (Wendyhouse).

Shot in a studio in Melbourne, ‘I’ve Been Broken’ sees both Househats and director Rintoul on their music video debut. Keeping within the theme of the song, the clip features inanimate objects being broken down and destroyed, and warped beyond reality.

Drummer and vocalist Joshua De Laurentiis on shooting the video:

We shot this the morning after we played a show at The Corner Hotel with Painters and Dockers, so I was pretty dusty, as we all were, which was fitting considering we literally smashed a bunch of stuff into dust”.

Since the release, the track has seen spot play on triple j, added to rotation on triple j Unearthed and strongly supported by community radio stations FBi, 4ZZZ, SYN FM, Radio Adelaide and 2SER.

Zoot Locker..The Best of The Zoot 1968-1971..featuring Rick Springfield, Darryl Cotton and Beeb Birtles

Zoot were a pop-rock band formed in Adelaide, South Australia in 1965 as Down the Line. They changed their name to Zoot in 1967 and by 1968 had relocated to Melbourne. They had a top five hit on the Go-Set national singles chart with a heavy rock cover of The Beatles' ballad "Eleanor Rigby" released in 1970; but they disbanded in May 1971.

Mainstay bass guitarist, Beeb Birtles, was later a founder of Little River Band in 1975 and guitarist singer-songwriter, Rick Springfield, who moved to the United States in 1972, achieved international fame as a solo artist, songwriter and actor.

Although Zoot were a popular band during the late 1960's, critics labeled them as teenybopper or light bubblegum due primarily to the Think Pink – Think Zoot publicity campaign devised by their management. After relocating to Melbourne in mid-1968, Zoot signed with Columbia Records/EMI Australia and were managed by Wayne de Gruchy. They recorded their first single, "You'd Better Get Goin' Now", a Jackie Lomax cover with David Mackay producing.

Zoot's second single, "1 × 2 × 3 × 4" was released in December and charted on the Go-Set National Top 40 Singles Chart. By early 1970, band members had tired of the garish pink outfits and associated harassment and physical abuse, hence, to rid themselves of the bubblegum/teen idol image, they burnt their outfits on TV music show, Happening '70. Zoot then promoted their fifth single "Hey Pinky", released in April, with an advertisement in Go-Set which featured a nude picture of their bums. "Hey Pinky" was a hard charging guitar oriented song but it failed to chart.

They released a hard rock cover of The Beatles' song, "Eleanor Rigby" which became their most popular single when it peaked at No. 4 in March 1971. It remained in the Top 40 for twenty weeks and reached No. 12 on the Top Records for the Year of 1971. Their next single, "The Freak" / "Evil Child", another hard rock song, was released in April and peaked into the top 30.

78 Best Melbourne Attractions Every Tourist Must See

Just for a change, thought I'd share an article that is NOT music related but about the highlights of the great city of Melbourne and the state of Victoria...enjoy

Being one of the most sport-centric cities in Australia, the more popular Melbourne attractions most definitely include landmarks like the MCG and Melbourne Park’s Rod Laver Arena, where the Australian Tennis Open is held each year. But don’t limit your exploration to Melbourne CBD.

The more memorable Melbourne attractions are worthy day trips away from the city centre including the World Heritage listed 12 Apostles on the Great Ocean Road; Phillip Island where you can see penguins wash up on shore; and Puffing Billy Steam Train, which will get you closer to Yarra Valley‘s finest wines.

Melbourne-based indie-rock group Halcyon Drive reveal new single 'Agnosia' and announce launch parties

Following on from their critically praised single ‘Silver Ray’, Melbourne-based indie-rock group Halcyon Drive have just revealed live dates and latest cut ‘Agnosia’ – another gripping number lifted from their forthcoming debut album (due late-2018).

Agnosia’ shines a light on the trio’s ability to shape songs eclectically, whilst still retaining apt cohesiveness, to ensure they never sway far from their charming and distinctive sound. Opening with searing fuzz-laden guitars, the track briskly bursts into a frenetic and brazen energy; a fitting foundation for the anthemic melodies of enigmatic front man Michael Oechsle.

Oechsle talks about the meaning behind ‘Agnosia’:

"This is a song about truth. A song about, how in this day and age, it's harder than ever to break free from whatever media, marketing or influence is being forced down our throats. I was lucky enough to be brought up by two incredible parents who never pushed me into anything, and always let me find my own truth. This is a song written from the complete opposite perspective- from the perspective of someone so lost in following or fighting other people's opinions, that they've lost the ability to think for themselves."

To coincide with the release, the band will play two shows at a Secret Location in Melbourne and Otto’s House Party at World Bar, Sydney. This continues on from a relentless April and May touring schedule, which included performances at The Hills are Alive Festival, headlining Rare Finds indie club night tour circuit and a support slot on Stereophonics sold-out Australian tour.

Previous single ‘Silver Ray’ was widely embraced by the likes of Australian radio stations triple j, 3RRR, SYN FM, 4ZZZ, Radio Adelaide and Edge Radio. The track also received support from worldwide tastemaker blogs Indie Shuffle (USA), Podcart (UK), The Revue (CAN), We Love That (GER), Niche Music (JAP), Red Bull Music, Laundry Echo, Savage Thrills and Pilerats.

Melbourne-based Househats return with new single 'I've Been Broken' and tour dates

After releasing standout tracks ‘All Together’ and ‘Stop', Melbourne-based group Househats announce tour dates and their infectious new cut ‘I’ve Been Broken', lifted from their forthcoming debut record ‘Running Out Of Time’ (due late-2018).

Recorded and produced by Alex Markwell (The Delta Riggs, Kita Alexander, Elliphant) and mixed by Michael Badger (King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, IV League), ‘I’ve Been Broken’ channels the hook-laden production of Parquet Courts and Beck.

Drummer and vocalist Joshua De Laurentiis describes the motivation behind the song:

That underlying feeling of meaningless and dread bubbles over more than I’d care to admit, and this song sits right in that pocket – it’s 9am after you’ve been awake for 24-hours straight and you’re thinking, ‘Do I have a coffee…or a bloody mary?’”

To coincide with the release, Househats will hit the road again with shows in Melbourne, Sydney and Newcastle. Househats have previously performed at boutique festival By The Meadow alongside Stella Donnelly, Fazerdaze and Tiny Little Houses, and traversed the East Coast sharing stages with Good Boy, The Pretty Littles, The Gooch Palms and Donny Benet.

The band’s first singles ‘All Together’ and ‘Stop’ were widely embraced by the likes of triple j, triple j Unearthed, Double J, community radio stations FBi, 3RRR, 4ZZZ and 2SER, and worldwide tastemaker blogs We All Want Someone to Shout For (USA), Dansende Beren (EUR), Pilerats and Laundry Echo.
