Northern Beaches quartet Down For Tomorrow energetic grunge-punk anthem "What Could Have Been"

Young and energetic Northern Beaches quartet Down For Tomorrow recently unveiled their latest grunge-punk anthem, ‘What Could Have Been’. The band honed their self-proclaimed “happy-sad Aussie grunge” sound growing up in the rich skating and surfing beaches community, and 'What Could Have Been’ sees them deliver their strongest and most all-encompassing work to date.

The track serves up a heartfelt, rough-around-the-edges statement, bursting with the kind of angst and raw emotion that wouldn't be out of place on a Vans Warped Tour stage. Opening with melancholic, even despondent vocals from lead singer Cody Stebbings, ‘What Could Have Been’ builds into a head-banging bridge that captures the frustration and heavier elements of their music.

Lead singer Cody Stebbings talks about the meaning behind ‘What Could Have Been’:

“'What Could Have Been' was written in a period where I was losing touch with many important friends, and I was just writing sad song after sad song and couldn't find any other release or a way to cover it up. It got to a point where I just realised, I've been wasting so much time trying to fix something that can’t be fixed, there’s no point desperately holding on to people who don’t want anything to do with you anymore. In the bridge, I wanted to leave a glimpse of hope at renewal, and help people see that we can all start over at some point.“

Since their inception, Down For Tomorrow have continually traversed the east coast of Australia, playing house parties, bars and all ages events. Over the last year they have supported other heavyweight Australian pop-punk bands such as Forever Ends Here, The Dead Love and Yours Truly.

Aussie Troubadour Thomas Keating Shares Soul-Baring Single "Today I'm Staying Home"

Melbourne-based singer/songwriter/troubadour Thomas Keating recently released his new single “Today I’m Staying Home,” a nakedly self-referencing song with themes of depression and self-care during times of stress and uncertainty.  As vulnerable and open as a diary entry, “Today I’m Staying Home” is a carefully crafted spotlight on a world that’s completely his own. Gentle guitar pulses atop a bed of driving percussion, as his strikingly clear vocals anchor the guitar-driven song. Produced by Gordon Burke and featuring Keating on guitar, Jenny McCullagh on violin & vocals, Gavin Perkins on bass and Tim Parsons on drums, the single will be available digitally February 1. Keating is also sharing a video to accompany the track, filmed during the recording process of the single.

Keating explains: “Today I'm Staying Home is inspired by one of those mornings where you wake up with the ‘f*ck its’, and you decide instead of leaving your bed or home to face your life and all the responsibilities that come with being an adult in this world, you just stay in. I've always struggled with bouts of depression and anxiety around the uncertainties and pressures of everyday life, and I guess at the time I wrote the song I was going through such a phase. I think it’s important to remember that at times it's okay just to feel like shit - it's okay to put your hand up and say 'I'm not dealing with this very well. I need help'. Mental health is extremely self-alienating, and I'd like to think that we are moving past the stigma of shame that has hung around such ailments for far too long.”

“‘Today, I’m Staying Home’ is a glorious, anthemic paean to cocooning from a prodigious new talent.  A rippling acoustic bedrock underpins Keating’s open heartfelt singing and chorus as wide and open as the Simpson Desert. This is a catchy, jaunty pop song whose lyrics are contrastingly tinged with a hint of regret and melancholia born out of internal struggle and pain.” Backseat Mafia

The Glory Days of Aussie Pub Rock Vol.2....various artists compilation

Volume 2 of The Glory Days of Aussie Pub Rock gathers once again gathers the cream of Aussie Rock from the 70's, 80's and 90's.

It features different tracks from the much the same list of big names as last time and much much more. That list of big names is massive. Cold Chisel, The Angels, Men at Work, Australian Crawl, the Sports, Jo Jo Zep & The Falcons, Mental As Anything, Split Enz, Sunnyboys, Screaming Jets, Rose Tattoo, the Radiators, Paul Kelly & The Coloured Girls, the Dingoes, Ian Moss, Goanna, Dragon, Flowers, Noiseworks, Hunters & Collectors, Skyhooks (their lone post-Shirl hit 'Over the Border'), Baby Animals, Billy Thorpe & the Aztecs, TMG, Dragon, Dave Warner's From the Suburbs, Choirboys, Richard Clapton, the Saints, the Reels, Mi-Sex, Mondo Rock, the Models, The Badloves (with Jimmy Barnes), Matt Finish, V Spy V Spy, Uncanny X-Men, Warumpi Band, Weddings Parties Anything, Russell Morris, Black Sorrows; all these and more are represented by tracks that not only shook pub walls back in the day but pumped out of transistor radios and, in most cases, Sunday night ABC TV screens too.

Also featured are plenty of big names who weren't included last time, including the Hoodoo Gurus, Jim Keays with his 1975 remake of 'Undecided', Ol'55, Kings of the Sun, Daddy Cool (with the rare 1975 comeback single 'All I Wanna Do Is Rock'), Little River Band, Mother Goose, Kevin Borich Express, Rose Tattoo slide guitarist Peter Wells' brilliant 'Between the Saddle and the Ground', Little Heroes with 'One Perfect Day', indigenous reggae-rock trailblazers No Fixed Address with 'Black Man's Rights', Vika & Linda rocking up a storm on a song that Paul Kelly wrote but never recorded with the Dots 'I Didn't Know Love Could Be Mine', Sydney '80s faves Flaming Hands, the Riptides and Dynamic Hepnotics, Melbourne mainstays Nick Barker & The Reptiles, Mike Rudd & the Heaters and the Spaniards (featuring Billy Miller & Mick Pealing), and glam-era pub favourites Hush, Taste and Supernaut.

Other noteworthy tracks include rare singles by Stars (1976's 'With A Winning Hand', which never appeared on an album) and post-Ol'55 power poppers the Breakers who featured in the original 'Puberty Blues' movie, and the first ever reissue of anything by Gary Young & the Rocking Emus (the great single 'Rockabilly Heaven', featuring the great Daddy Cool/Jo Jo Zep drummer together with late fellow DC members Wayne Duncan and Ross Hannaford). There's also the rare but great 1971 single 'If You Got It' by legendary Adelaide group Fraternity, featuring Bon Scott on vocals.

The collection ends with the Party Boys and John Swan - John had replaced Bon in Fraternity - who together give us an idea of what AC/DC might've sounded like if Swanee had also replaced Bon (or Brian) in AC/DC, with a ripping 'High Voltage.'

A sheer smörgåsbord for lovers of classic Aussie Rock!

Hounded Unveils Dreamy New Single and Video For 'Hollow' Ft. Panama and Tour

Sydney-based producer Hounded (real name Edan Visser) has just revealed tour dates and his spirited new single ‘Hollow’ ft. Panama.

Hollow’ is an elegant, drenched-in-melancholia slice of indie-pop. Opening with eclectic instrumentation and the endearing melodies of Panama, the track gently builds before bursting into a flurry of bouncing rhythms and colourful walls of synths. The deftly arranged song never loses sight of its infectious and uplifting energy.

Hounded describes the motivation behind the track:

I was originally trying to write this uplifting little pop track, but Panama’s lyrics were dark and melancholic, screaming of love loss. That wasn’t how I heard the song at all. But I ultimately realised that these two ideas can coexist in sound, because they coexist in life. Someone may be going through a breakup and listen to the record and relate to what Panama is saying and feel some kind of connection to it. While others may hear the uplifting instrumentation and feel a sense of joy. We really tried to capture and contrast both elements because they exist together in the real world”.

Hollow’ ft. Panama is the latest step in a career that only kicked off three years ago. Hounded grew up playing rock and metal on guitar, but that all changed when he discovered electronic music channels like Majestic Casual and Mr Suicide Sheep on YouTube. Inspired, he started to tinker on his own bedroom tracks with the aim to be uploaded to them one day (he got his wish in 2016 when Majestic Casual featured 'Feel So Right').

Sydney-based screaming rap-rock-electro-pop mutants Redhook unleash new single ‘Paralysed’

Sydney-based screaming rap-rock-electro-pop mutants RedHook recently unleashed their brand-new single, ‘Paralysed’ - produced by Stevie Knight (Trophy Eyes, Stand Atlantic) and Dave Petrovic (Northlane, Tonight Alive) and mixed by Andrew Wade (A Day To Remember, The Ghost Inside).

Paralysed’ sees the band showcase their more melodic side, twisting their signature cocktail of EDM-influenced production and psychotic riffage with huge dark pop vocals, as singer Emmy Mack turns her aggression inward.

Anyone who’s ever struggled with their mental health will understand the feeling that this song is about, probably all too well,” Mack explains.

It shines an ugly but very real spotlight on those dark periods when depression and anxiety is crushing you - and inside you’re just screaming at yourself to snap out of it and get on with business, but physically - you just can’t. It’s like you’re incapacitated, you can’t even move. You’re fighting as hard as you can but you feel paralysed.”

Their previous single ‘Turn Up The Stereotype’ was supported via Spotify with over 100K streams, triple j Unearthed rotation, multiple spins on triple j (2018 With Richard Kingsmill, Good Nights, Home & Hosed, short.fast.loud & more), and a coveted 5-star Unearthed review from presenter, Bridget Hustwaite. The official music video was also added to rotation on ABC’s Rage.

New single 'Concrete Pillow' from Sydney based artist/ producer D Minor featuring Gold Coast's Alli Simpson

Australian music charity MMAD (Musicians Making A Difference) recently announced the latest release by Sydney-based international recording and performing artist D Minor. His new single Concrete Pillow, featuring Alli Simpson gives insight into his troubled childhood and experiences with violence, homelessness and overall life struggles.

Many years in the making, he started penning they lyrics at an early age to escape hardship and cope with his turbulent family life. “Concrete Pillow talks about my life, and what I've been through - the pain and struggles I had to endure as a child, becoming homeless, placed in foster homes, and shuffled between refuges," he reveals.

A music journalist recently wrote that “D Minor is on the rise and is one to watch”.

Despite being homeless by age 11, kicked out of school soon after, and then as a 14-year-old was heartbreakingly separated from his twin brother when they were placed in separate foster homes, D Minor has amazingly managed to overcome adversity and rise to success. Now eagerly completing his degree at the Australian Institute of Music, D Minor reveals he had coincidentally reunited
with his brother at a refuge two years after they'd been torn apart. "We reconnected and ensured we sticked together throughout the rest of our time in refuges," he adds.

As his love and passion for music became his salvation, his passion for inspiring young people through his music also grew and he regularly started performing for youth events and charities.

Also featured on the single is 20-year-old Gold Coast singer, model, actress and host Alli Simpson. Having released three of her own singles in recent years, Alli has a huge social media following and has lent her voice to anti-bullying initiatives, enjoying using her public profile to positively impact people. Having also experienced homelessness firsthand, Alli says when the opportunity arose to work alongside D Minor on Concrete Pillow she jumped at the chance.

Sydney band GRILL release single 'DIRTY TWO'....funky grooves with prog-rock

Sydney four-piece, Grill, have summoned the Gods of Groove to manifest the funk within your soul with their new independent release single 'Dirty Two'  .

Created for the singular intention of getting down on the dance floor, Dirty Two is a tasteful blend of thunderous funk grooves of Funky Knuckles, with the gnarly rock guitars of King Crimson.

I like to describe Dirty Two as a thick fluid of funk, that's snaking through a solid rock backbone.” Andres, Guitarist of Grill.

Grill have again chosen to address deeper concepts in their latest release with Dirty Two’s lyrics, “You’re made to be blind, by design" depicting a society absent from social and cultural awareness. Grill previously released their debut album “ The Eternal Presence” in April which symbolised the relationship between Man and Earth.

"The new single flows through a variety of sonic soundscapes, leaving a trail of funk-fuelled destruction wherever it goes." - Happy Mag

Sydney-based surf band Forest Hall release new single and music video “Broke Forever”

Sydney-based surf band Forest Hall recently released their new single and music video “Broke Forever”. This is the first offering from the bands sophomore EP. Broke Forever serves as an anthem for the youth with relatable lyrics and themes. Written in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales, it’s quite easy to feel the bands character and drive behind the release.

We’re hoping people enjoy the song sonically and can relate to the lyrics, being young and broke but still managing a fun time. We want to transport people to a 1960’s garage near the beach.”

Having been compared to heavy weights such as Wavves & Queens of The Stone Age, the band is most favoured for their punchy, lo-fi garage rock vibes and were finalist in Hhhhappy Magazines “Needle in the Hay” during 2017. The single is also accompanied by a music video that stars Australian internet sensation and comedian Freindlyjordies who undertakes various activities of youthly nature which ties into the theme of the song itself.

After playing the local Sydney circuit for some time and gearing up to release their Sophomore EP, Forest Hall are a promising collective to keep your eyes on.

Normie Rowe....Frenzy! The 50th Anniversary Collection...30 track compilation

Norman John Rowe AM (born 1 February 1947) is an Australian singer and songwriter of pop music and an actor of theatre and soap opera for which he remains best known as Douglas Fletcher in 1980s serial Sons and Daughters. As a singer he was credited for his bright and edgy tenor voice and dynamic stage presence. Many of Rowe's most successful recordings were produced by Nat Kipner and later by Pat Aulton, house producers for the Sunshine Records label. Backed by his band, The Playboys, Rowe released a string of Australian pop hits on the label that kept him at the top of the Australian charts and made him the most popular solo performer of the mid-1960s. Rowe's double-sided hit the A-side, a reworking of the Doris Day hit "Que Sera Sera" /with b-side "Shakin' All Over" was one of the most successful Australian singles of the 1960s.

Between 1965 and 1967 Rowe was Australia's most popular male star but his career was cut short when he was drafted for compulsory military service (called National Service in Australia) in late 1967. His subsequent tour of duty in Vietnam effectively ended his pop career and having never been able to recapture the success in music he enjoyed at his peak in the 1960s, instead carving out a career in theatre and television.

Samskara Radio release debut single 'Can't Kill The Radio'..catchy 80’s infused electro-pop rock

Simon Marrocco debuts the release of his new music project Samskara Radio, with a catchy 80’s infused electro-pop rock single ‘Can’t Kill The Radio’.

Have a listen to ‘Can’t Kill The Radio’ here: https://soundcloud.com/samskararadio

Can’t Kill The Radio’ is about being confronted with some of lives biggest truths. When we hit rock bottom we start to question who we are and what has led us to be the person we are today; through all of life’s experiences of achievements, relationships, teachings and travels around the world. We are forced to surrender our level of control over what we think we can control, but really can’t. Words can just be labels and the concepts that we learn from childhood can’t really hurt us. The person we have been taught to create in our head is a projection on the screen of life and the screen never really changes. Life lives through us and living life new every day is the key. The field of creativity happens in the now. Being kind to yourself and others, enjoying life and the beauty that is all around us is in fact a form of art itself.

The track was engineered by Troy Borg at Sunnyside Studios, mixed by Michael Badger at Jaya Jaya Music (with credits such as King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard’s ARIA award winning album Nonagon Infinity) and mastered by David Briggs at The Production Workshop. Cover artwork designed by Frank Kruse.

Simon has always been surrounded by music; through his younger years growing up in his birth town of Lenola, Italy and in Melbourne after his parents migrated to Australia when he was just 8. He sang in Choirs then started writing his own songs with his acoustic guitar which transitioned to performing at folk venues in Melbourne. By the early 80’s, Simon was performing in successful bands who were busy backing some huge names in music with the likes of John Farnham, The Angels and The Sunny Boys.
