 A collection of some of the great 45's released during Australia's most prolific independent era of 1976 to 1989. Tales highlights selections from the previous careers of acts like (The Victims & Fun Things), Gangajang (The Riptides), The Cruel Sea (Sekret Sekret), Dave Graney (The Moodists), Big Heavy Stuff (Ups & Downs), You Am I (The Bamboos), Tex Perkins, (Thug), Dirty Three (Venom P. Stinger) as well as classic early releases from Radio Birdman, The Saints, The Scientists, Triffids, Died Pretty, The Mark Of Cain and the Hard-Ons.

In addition, Tales from the Australian Underground includes a selection of seminal tracks, previously unreleased on CD. Featured among others are Pel Mel, Sunnyboys, Sardine, Psycho Surgeons, The Leftovers, Do Re Mi, The Numbers, Tactics, X and Wet Taxis. Besides offering up an indie 'best of', Tales from the Australian Underground gives the listener an insight into the sounds and musical styles that were developed over the highlighted period. Melbourne-based indie-punk group Househats drop new party jam 'Stop'

Following on from their critically praised debut cut 'All Together', Melbourne-based indie-punk group, Househats, have just unveiled their new single 'Stop' - recorded and mixed by the same All Together team of Dan Caswell (Horace Bones, DIET.) and Michael Badger (King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, IV League).

Taking cues from the trio's staple influences Eddy Current Suppression Ring, Omni and Parquet Courts, 'Stop' combines elements of garage-rock and post-punk, while also blending well-crafted pop sensibilities, that are sure to inspire many rowdy house party sing-a-longs.




Drummer Joshua De Laurentiis describes the motivation behind the track:

"Life can often just get away from you, and Stop is about really dialling back the hectic speed in this age of post-millennial malaise and trying to get yourself back on track"

Debut single 'All Together' was strongly supported across all of the triple j platforms (with high rotation on triple j unearthed and multiple spins on some of triple j's biggest programs Goodnights, 2017 with Richard Kingsmill, Home & Hosed) along with love from worldwide radio and tastemaker blogs.

They've shared stages with The Gooch Palms and Mike Noga (The Drones), and to coincide with this release, Househats will perform at Sydney Road Street Party, Cruisin' For A Boozin' and By The Meadow.

Born Lion reveal taster track 'Drag' and release date for album 'Celebrate The Lie'

Sydney-based quartet, Born Lion have just unveiled tour dates and a video for ‘Drag’. It's the second track lifted from their forthcoming sophomore studio album ‘Celebrate the Lie’ (due February 16) – produced by Jimmy Balderstone (Luca Brasi, High Tension, Grenadiers) and mixed by Ryan Hazell (The Drones, Green Buzzard).

Carried by its thunderous, dynamic rhythmic section, volcanic riffage and infectious group sing-a-longs, new cut ‘Drag’ delivers on another exciting take of abrasive and unpredictable melodic punk-rock that the band has become widely known for.

Shot in the suburbs of Sydney’s Inner-west by Paste Studios, the accompanying video keeps in line with the theme of the track, by highlighting an absurd situation, where someone is forced to pretend that everything is normal.

The candid narrative sees the protagonist (played by front man John Bowker) attend a blind band audition. It turns out, the members are chickens… mean chickens. During smoko, the lead character pulls out a chicken burger – it doesn’t go well for him after that. 

The album’s first single, ‘Evil K’ was widely embraced by the likes of Spotify, Rolling Stone Australia, Music Feeds, The Music, Hysteria Magazine, radio stations FBi, 4ZZZ, 3RRR and triple j - who added the track to spot rotation.

Following on from their ‘Evil K’ headline tour, Born Lion have further traversed the countryside, sharing stages alongside Ecca Vandal, Shihad and Guttermouth. The four-piece will continue their rampage across the continent, this time teaming up with Melbourne crowd favourites ‘Captives’, with shows in Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane and Sydney.

Sunnyboys..This Is Real...Singles/Live/Rare

Sunnyboys were a power pop/post-punk band that formed in Sydney in 1980. Fronted by singer-songwriter, guitarist Jeremy Oxley, the band "breathed some freshness and vitality into the divergent Sydney scene". Their first two albums, Sunnyboys and Individuals both appeared in the Top 30 of the Australian Kent Music Report Albums Chart.

They signed to Mushroom Records in February 1981, becoming the first Sydney-based band on the label. Their first release was a single, "Happy Man" (Mushroom, K8335), which reached number 26 on the national singles chart. The same month they made an independent EP entitled Happy Birthday, containing the tracks "What You Need", "Why Do I Cry?", "I Want To Be Alone" and "Let You Go". This was given away at gigs.

Sunnyboys' eponymous debut album was recorded at Alberts Studio in Sydney between May and July 1981 with producer/mentor Lobby Loyde. The album (with an initial print run of 2,000 on yellow vinyl) reached number 13 on the national album charts in October 1981, establishing them as a headline attraction. A second single was taken from the album, a re-recorded version of "Alone With You", which also reached number 26 on the national singles chart.

Sunnyboys originally broke up in June 1984. Jeremy Oxley formed various incarnations of the band throughout the 1980's and into 1991, as the only original member. The original line-up (without Burgman) reunited for a one-off show in 1998 for the Mushroom 25 Concert. In 2012 the original line-up reunited for a surprise show in Sydney as part of the Dig It Up concert series, billed as "Kids In Dust". The original line-up of Sunnyboys later played sporadic shows in 2013 and also undertook national headline tours in March 2014 and March 2015.

The Birthday Party...Prayers On Fire and Junkyard...1981/82 albums

The Birthday Party, an Australian post-punk band, began under various names in Melbourne in 1973; formed by vocalist Nick Cave, guitarist Mick Harvey, drummer Phill Calvert, guitarist John Cocivera, bassist Brett Purcell, and saxophonist Chris Coyne —all of whom were students at Caulfield Grammar School. By 1978, following several membership changes, the band consisted of Cave, Harvey and Calvert with bassist Tracy Pew and guitarist Rowland S Howard. Under the name The Boys Next Door, the band released several singles and two studio albums, Door, Door in 1979 on Mushroom Records and The Birthday Party in 1980 on Missing Link Records.

Despite moderate success in Australia, The Boys Next Door relocated to London, England in 1980 and changed their name to The Birthday Party. In London, the band experienced underground critical success with a series of singles and two further studio albums, Prayers on Fire (1981) and Junkyard (1982); Junkyard was also a minor commercial success, peaking at number 72 on the UK Albums Chart upon its release.
